In From Darkness, you have to survive for as long as possible by building your town and hiring soldiers to defend it with limited resources at your disposal. Your town’s buildings and villagers will be attacked every night and each night brings with it more attackers causing greater harm. Build, recruit and upgrade to survive and be sure to keep up. When the Town Center falls, the game is over. Win the game by flying away to greener pastures in a hot-air balloon!

Buildings

Overview

Buildings can be built on the map. Town buildings must be built in proximity to the Town Center, and farms can be built outside of that area.

To build a building you will need an idle villager, who from that point on will work at the building. The nearest idle villager will be allocated.

Camps are not buildable, but instead will spawn far outside the town area.

Town Buildings

You can have a maximum of five buildings (excluding farms and towers) and you always start with a Town Center. So build any four additional town buildings.

Town Center

Town Center

You start off with a Town Center which allows you to hire villagers to assign to other roles.

Note: Hiring controls and instructions can be viewed in the main menu [Esc].

Keep in mind, every time you hire a villager, they cost more.

Villagers that are idle will go out during the day to forage – foraging translates to money. Money from foraging is stored at the Town Center but remains unusable until collected by you. The Town Center will also spawn a free villager every day.

In order to upgrade your other buildings you will need a level-2 Town Center. Once you have built four town buildings, your Town Center will upgrade automatically.

Inn

Inn

Building an Inn will make villagers cheaper to hire from the Town Center. Over a period of time this can save you a lot of money. The Inn will also improve revenue from foraging.

On level 2, the Inn will start recruiting the vagabonds from the camps outside of town as villagers. Normally, this would require you to travel outside of town thus saving you the trip.

Bank

Bank

The Bank will allow you to invest any surplus money on which you will earn interest. Interest is compounded. You can withdraw both your earnings and investment from the bank at any time. The bank halves the cost of Balloons.

On level 2 you will earn even more in interest.

Barn

Barn

Building a Barn will increase the rate at which Farms generate money. It will also make farms cheaper to build and to upgrade.

A level-2 Barn will make farms even more profitable.

Hospital

Hospital

Injured soldiers will come to the Hospital to heal after battle. The Hospital also grants extra armor to all units.

A level-2 Hospital will grant even more armor to units.

Barracks

Barracks

At the Barracks you can train melee units i.e. soldiers. You need to have a free villager to train a soldier. Soldiers can attack and block enemy attacks. Soldiers patrol the town during the day and at nightfall they take their posts at the town perimeter to defend.

Note: Farms are built outside the town perimeter but are not targets of attack.

A level-2 barracks will grant additional armor to soldiers.

Your soldiers will also gain a bonus when they are in your proximity and fighting an enemy, so be sure to join your soldiers at night.

Archery

Archery

At the Archery you can train archers. You need a free villager to train an archer. Archers can attack at range but they are unable to block incoming melee attacks.

A level 2 Archery grants additional armor to archers.

Your soldiers will also gain a bonus when they are in your proximity and fighting an enemy, so be sure to join your soldiers at night.

Other Buildings

Farm

Farm

Farms generate money and are built outside of town. The further they are from the Town Center, the more they cost to build and the less productive they are. A farmer will walk back into town at night after the work shift, so the further they need to walk the less productive they are.

Farms can be upgraded twice and become more profitable.

Camp

Camp

Camps can’t be built but are gathering spots for vagabonds far outside the village. Villagers can be recruited at camps free of cost but you will need to travel to them in order to recruit villagers.

Tower

Defense Tower

Towers are supplemental defence buildings and will shoot at enemies close by.

Note: A Tower will automatically recruit a villager as an archer to man it. A second villager will be recruited when the Tower is upgraded.

Balloon

Balloon

As soon as you’ve saved up enough money after weeks of hard work, build a hot-air balloon to fly away and start your new life. You have won the game.

Note: Since it requires a large sum of money to construct, balloons are only possible after having built a thriving town that manages to survive daily onslaughts.

Biomes

Each biome confers different benefits to your town. The biomes are: the Forest, Woods and Marsh. A biome will be randomly selected each time you start a new game.

Forest

forrest

When playing in the Forest your farms will perform better.

Woods

When in the woods, your archers will perform better.

Marsh

When playing in the Marsh you will earn more from foraging.

Basic strategy

In the early game it is best to try and get as many villagers as possible. Hire as many as you can from the Town Center and travel to camps to get more.

On the third day, you should build either a Barracks or an Archery, and hire at least one soldier to defend your town, two are recommended. Towers can help balance the cost of defending your town.

Note:┬áConsider which biome you’re in to make the most of the perks of your environment.

From there on, build up your town and hire more soldiers. You can only build four town buildings (in addition to the Town Center), so choose wisely. Remember, an Inn reduces the cost of growing your town’s population, a Barn optimizes farming income, a Bank produces interest on surplus funds, and a Hospital makes your soldiers more resilient.
